Balancing a Busy Schedule With An Ever-Present God

Having a busy schedule is something I remember loving when I was younger. I always wanted to be doing something, and as long as that “something” was not at home, I didn’t care what it was. I enjoyed being busy. Now, as an almost eighteen-year-old graduate managing three jobs, preparing for college, and running a blog, I can’t say I feel the same way anymore. And one of the reasons why I feel so different is because I no longer feel like I have time for God.

So how do we make time for Him? Because, in all honesty, when working 40+ hours a week all I want to do in my free time is rest; I’m too exhausted to do much of anything. This is very discouraging when I know I want to grow in my faith but feel like I don’t have the time or energy to.

A few weeks ago I heard Sadie Robertson answer this very question. In case you don’t know who she is, Sadie is an author, Christian speaker, and was previously on the show, Duck Dynasty. Being a part of all these things, Sadie is busy and has had to find her time with God in the middle of all of it. But her answer was not one that involved making time; she answered by simply saying God is in her schedule. Always. In the midst of a busy day, Jesus still walks with her, and she has time with Him, and she grows in her faith.

You see, our relationship with God isn’t a “switch” we flip off whenever we get “too busy to talk”. It’s not a relationship that we put on pause and come back to only before meals and when we’re about to fall asleep. Christ is ever-present regardless of whether we’re thinking about Him or not (Psalm 46:1). And if God is always present in our lives, we owe it to Him to be present with Him.

I do want to clarify that carving out time for God is a great way to have a closer relationship. It’s a beautiful thing to take time out of the day to dig into scripture and understand His heart, and I think this kind of time is integral to growing closer to Christ. But for those who can’t do this every day, allowing God to be active throughout a hectic schedule will allow Him to walk with you in every moment, wherever you may be. God’s spirit has no bounds and will always remain with us whether we’re at work, school, or any other place we find ourselves (Joshua 1:9).

When we’re running errands, taking exams, or sitting in the office, acknowledging God can also help get us through these moments. And although he is our heavenly Father and friend, we should see our relationship with Him like an Earthly relationship. A friend of mine once put it this way: If Jesus was on Earth today how close of a relationship would you have with Him? Would you hang out with Him and text Him how you were feeling? Would you text Him before other friends? Where would your relationship stand with Him?

Throughout your crazy day just remember God is walking with you through every moment. Remember to allow Christ to use you as His vessel during your schedule and have an ongoing conversation with Him as you go about your day. Acknowledging Him gives us the ability to grow closer to His heart and keep us in check with His will in every moment.
